Who is the team’s clown: “There’s too many, if I were to narrow it down it would have to be KAleb Warner or Mason Loewen.”

On Saturday November 12th The Rockhurst University Men’s basketball team started their season off with a win against Nebraska Wesleyan University 101-91 at Mason-Halpin Field House. Drew Deiner will coach the hawks for the 206-2017 season in his second year at Rockhurst University. Before Deiner arrived the hawks had a record of 7 wins and 19 losses during the 2014-2015 season. The Hawks saw improvement under Deiner as they finished with a record of 12 wins and 15 losses in the 2015-2016 season in which they reached the GLVC tournament for the first time since 2011. “I hope to lead the men’s basketball program in a way that will make the University community proud and add to the already strong athletic tradition at Rockhurst. Although it was difficult to leave a great school, program, and group of guys at Stritch, I am fired up to join the team at Rockhurst. I am familiar with the quality of player and coaches in the GLVC and am looking forward to the challenge.” - Drew Deiner

Before Rockhurst, Deiner coached Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. Deiner won six Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season titles, three CCAC tournament titles and one national championship during his time with the Wolves. He owns an overall record of 168-43 including 95-7 in conference play and 73-8 at home.

The Hawks have gotten off to a good start and currently sit above .500 with a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. They are currently coming off a two game winning streak with wins against William Jewell and Rogers State University. Travis House, Junior from El Dorado Kansas led the Hawks with 22 point against William Jewell. The junior was five for eight from behind the arc. Senior Malachi Nix led the Hawks against Rogers State with 23 points and 6 assist. Nix scored 16 points in the second half connecting on 13 of 16 from the free-throw line.

Nix and House are among the leading scores for the Hawks.

The Hawks where ranked 4th in the GLVC West at the beginning of the season. Ranked ahead of the Hawks where Quincy, Drury, and Truman State. The Hawks are currently ranked 6th with a 1-2 record in conference play. The Hawks recorded losses to Truman State and Quincy and a win against William Jewell. The next GLVC matchup fro the Hawks will be against Bellarmine University on January 5th.

The hawks are returning two starters Malachi Nix and Alex Hagan. Nix averaged 11.3 points and 5.4 assists per game while leading the GLVC in assist last year. Hagan averaged 8.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game during the 2015-2016 season. Returning for the Hawks also is senior Will Katherine and sophomores Conner Evans and John Burton

Deiner has brought some new talent to the team this year. The Hawks welcome four junior transfers 6-3 guard Mason Loewen, 6-2 guard Travis House, 6-7 forward Kaleb Warner and 7-0 center Gabe Brown. The Junior transfers have proven to be a valuable asset to the Hawks as they look to improve on last season.

The future looks bright for the Hawks. Under Coach Deiner the team has already improved its record in one year. With the addition of four talented junior transfers the Hawks look to improve on the record once again. Malachi Nix continues to be a key player for the Hawks in his senior season. While the Hawks are 1-2 in the GLVC West they have six conference games remaining in the season. If the Hawks can win a majority of their upcoming conference games they will have a shot at qualifying for the GLVC tournament for the second year in a row under Coach Deiner
